Video + article: Slovak Museum of Design on its way to create a 1:1 T 603X Coupe
The Slovak Museum of Design (SMD) has recently completed a visualization of the Tatra 603 X Coupé project, which will be a model for real-world modelling. Even for that time, an attractive car from the city on the Danube obviously gets its second chance.
The modernized successor of the popular “sixth-wheel” from the Socialist era of the former Czechoslovakia was originally produced in Bratislava, but it did not get it into a functional prototype. Tatra Kopřivnice canceled the project.
The history of the first Slovak coupé, which had the potential of serial production thanks to its “quadriver sister”, was composed by SMD enthusiasts from drawings, technical drawings, models and snippets of memories of the direct participants of the dreamed project, which began with the proposal of John Cine in 1963.
Variant Coupé has never seen the light of the world and remained just as an unfulfilled dream. SMD motorists and design enthusiasts believe that this is the last chance for the Tatra people in Bratislava to meet and, together with them, this more than half a year’s car dream has gone into reality.
“We have just completed the computer visualization of the Tatry 603 X Coupé and therefore also data for model milling. The basis was the technical drawings of the Coupé, photographs and the gypsum model of the limousine at 1:10. We sent pictures to Jan Cin’s corrections to Canada. If everything goes well, at the end of May, the author himself will modify the 1: 4 model in the modelar plasticine so that we can then make perfect shapes at a 1: 1 scale, “says the official SMD website.

Aleš Loprais wins Morocco Desert Challenge
A Czech team Instaforex Loprais Team has managed to win the Morocco Desert Challenge. Aleš Loprais with his crew, consisting of Ferran Marco Alcayna and Petr Pokora, did not finish first just in the truck category, but also in the overall standings. All that after very difficult eight days at the biggest truck race in the world.
Eight stages, thirty-three trucks and almost 2,500 kilometres stood between Aleš Loprais and the finish line. But Loprais managed to win three stages and took an overall victory with a 23-minute lead over Martin van den Brink who finished second.
“I think this is a great satisfaction for us. We’ve come here mainly for testing and we just wanted to be fast and reliable. And we’ve managed to do all that, plus we’ve also won. I’d like to say thank you to the guys in the cabin, to our mechanics and also all our partners for their support and allowing us to start here,” said Aleš Loprais after the finish line.
“I was expecting much bigger technical problems. But in the end, we just had some problems with sensors and that was it. Punctures are just part of this difficult competition. I can’t wait for the next challenge,” said a cabin mechanic Petr Pokora.
“It was a very beautiful but also very hard competition. We kept getting better every day and got into the lead. Aleš and all the mechanics did a great job and I’m very happy with our result. It was a great win,” said Spanish navigator Ferran Marco Alcayna.
Aleš Loprais with his crew didn’t win just in the truck category, but they also finished first in the overall standings with a time 31:02:08.
“This race is a part of our Dakar 2019 mission and it’s really nice to win like this. It was a very difficult African adventure, but a successful one, a golden one,” added Loprais.

Tatra Register Deutschland had a nice stand again at the Techno Classica this year, exhibiting Pierre Steichen’s T 97
It attracted a lot of interested people
Not alone surprising generous people attended,
but also may Tatra fans of European Tatra clubs, including air-cooled fans.
As the exhibition grounds in Essen are under reconstruction, the hall that housed the Tatra clubs in the past, will be turned down with unclear whether there will be a Tatra stand at the Techno Classica next year.
Austro-Tatra Typ 18a
Unusual is the open Gendarmerie car that Alfred Umgeher from Lower Austria has brought to the Veteran Meeting. His 1950 Type 18 is the sole roadworthy specimen of its kind. Back then, Austro Tatra in Vienna converted half-finished Volkswagens into cabriolets for the Austrian Gendarmerie in a mini-series of nine cars.
1950 Volkswagen Type 18: converted for the Austrian Gendarmerie by Austro Tatra (Vienna)
This particular official vehicle is utterly unique with its hand-made parts such as longer doors and a trunk lid fitted for a second alternator, wider door sills and other adjustments. After two years of reconstruction, the Gendarmerie Cabriolet has been back in use for almost 20 years – with Alfred Umgeher driving the 24.5 PS veteran in style on special occasions.
