DAF Trucks and TATRA announced today that they have signed an agreement for DAF to acquire 19% ownership in TATRA a.s. DAF will also supply engines and cabs to the Czech truck manufacturer. “DAF’s minority ownership in TATRA further strengthens DAF’s industry-leading position in the heavy truck segment in Central Europe,” said Harrie Schippers, DAF Trucks president.
“With these agreements, the new line of TATRA off-road vehicles will combine the quality, reliability and technological leadership of the PACCAR MX 12.9 litre engine and DAF CF cab with TATRA’s versatile off-road chassis which features exceptional performance in the most difficult operating conditions,” said Ronald A. Adams, TATRA chairman and chief executive officer. TATRA’s range of new off road vehicles (4×4, 6×6, 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12) will also be sold by DAF dealers throughout Europe and complement DAF’s premium range of construction vehicles. Delivery of DAF cabs and PACCAR engines to TATRA will begin later this year.
“DAF is the commercial vehicle product quality leader in Europe”, added Schippers. “DAF has been consistently gaining market share in Europe for 10 years and our excellent reputation for cab ergonomics, engine performance and aftermarket support has contributed significantly to that growth.” The PACCAR MX 12.9 litre engine – developed and manufactured by DAF Trucks in Eindhoven – is renowned for its superb performance, excellent reliability and fuel efficiency. DAF cabs are produced in DAF’s state-of-the-art production plant in Westerlo (Belgium) and represent the industry quality standard in comfort and fit and finish.
TATRA a.s., founded in 1850, is among the oldest automotive companies in the world. The Czech company’s product range includes a complete portfolio of heavy duty off-road vehicles, all with excellent mobility even in the most challenging terrains and extreme climatic conditions. “We are looking forward to a long lasting relationship with DAF”, said Adams. “TATRA’s endurance test programs have proven the outstanding quality and durability of the DAF components, which will further strengthen our position in the segment of the heavy duty off-road trucks.”
DAF Trucks N.V. is a subsidiary of PACCAR Inc. and is a manufacturer of high quality light, medium and heavy duty trucks. DAF is a leader in providing product-related services: MultiSupport Repair and Maintenance Contracts, PACCAR Financial, PACCAR Leasing and PACCAR Parts. We have been informed that Lubomir Rek (1925-2011) has passed away at the age of 86 years.

Probably little known by a broader public, Rek was employed by Tatra and was one of the leading technicians to develop the T 603 engine for the T 603 saloon and T 607 Monopost. Further he acted as a co-driver/navigator and technical manager in Tatra’s T 600 and T 603 motorsport program.

TATRA and DAF Trucks Sign Cooperation Agreements
Relationship is a “Quantum Leap for TATRA “, says CEO Ronald Adams
KOPŘIVNICE (August 2, 2011) – TATRA, a. s., a traditional producer of world-famous heavy-duty vehicles for commercial and defence segments, announces that it has concluded agreements on cooperation with DAF Trucks N.V. Main focus of the cooperation is the supply of DAF manufactured engines and cabs for a new range of TATRA vehicles, as well as the distribution of these TATRA products by leveraging the dealer networks of the two companies. Also, as part of the agreements, DAF will acquire 19% of the shares in TATRA a.s.
“We began with the goal to design a new TATRA vehicle featuring the newest innovations of the unique TATRA chassis and applying the state-of-the-art DAF cabins and PACCAR engines. The project has resulted in a much wider cooperation, one that perfectly cultivates TATRA’s global strategy and at the same time adds to DAF’s dealer product portfolio. The fruit of this is an outstanding vehicle which responds to the needs of our most demanding customers and which will be delivered through a stronger and expanded TATRA dealer network,” said Ronald Adams, TATRA’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors.
“DAF has been consistently gaining market share in Europe and our class leading reputation for driver comfort, engine development and after sales support services has contributed significantly to that growth”, said Harrie Schippers, DAF Trucks president. “We are delighted that we are able to contribute to TATRA’s new, state-of-the-art truck, which also offers a great opportunity for our DAF dealers, as it expands their current product portfolio with an all-wheel drive, high mobility commercial truck.”
The new TATRA truck, designed and built in Kopřivnice, will gradually become TATRA’s flagship product in the commercial segments. With its innovative features, it will deliver uncompromising performance and unrivalled value to customers in construction, mining, forestry, oil & gas and other segments. With this standard-setting product and its availability through the enhanced dealer network, TATRA expects to enter new territories and reach thousands of new customers. To drive its global sales strategy, TATRA will leverage dealer networks of both DAF and TATRA and utilize special financing products available through PACCAR Financial Services.
TATRA CEO Adams said, “This relationship gives TATRA a quantum leap ahead in its commercial vehicle markets. It would take TATRA tens of years and many millions of Euros to build such a wide and successful network of dealers throughout Europe, not to mention the tens or even hundreds of millions of Euros which would have been required to develop such a world-class cabin and engine.“
Further details regarding the new TATRA truck will be available at www.thenewtatra.com.

Pursuant to rider no. 3, Russian Firdaus Kabirov has been handed a penalty of 1 hour and 1,000 euros for speeding during the departure from the bivouac in Stavropol this morning.
As a result, the Kamaz driver, who was the overall leader this evening with a margin of 43:19 minutes over Czech Ales Loprais (Tatra), has been relegated to 2nd in the general classification. This means that, at the end of the 6th special, Czech Ales Loprais (Tatra) leads the 3rd Silk Way Rally, 16′41″ ahead of Russian Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz).
The victory of Ales Loprais was officially confirmed upon the handling of the protest raised by the Kamaz Team against the time penalty handed to Kabirov. The afternoon ceremony in Krasnaya Polyana concluded the tough event.
The one-hour penalty was given to crew No. 305, Kabirov, Mokeev, Tanin for speeding after leaving the bivouac in Stavropol. The speed is generally checked on the GPS device upon entry of the vehicle to the next bivouac. The infringement was evident enough not to be ignored. Moreover, the whole incident had peculiar circumstances in Stage 6. Ales Loprais lost some time in the stage when repairing the central inflation system. Kabirov entered the stage with a comfortable lead of 52 minutes and he could therefore afford not to hurry too much during the stage. Even being the leading truck, he stopped to help his fellow countryman, Mironenko, to free the BMW from the ravine, although the task could have been done by any of Kabirov’s teammates. At the finish, he was losing 16 minutes to junior Mardeev. The same 16 minutes as was the gap to Ales Loprais after the penalty. He was not aware of the fact that the speeding incident had been recorded.
“Although it is a bit strange that after 6 days of hard battles in the desert the race is decided this way, we are glad for the victory. The overall result is a result of not only times reached in the specials but also by fulfillment of all safety and sporting rules. The new truck showed its potential and we know how to resume its further development. We spend a long time building it under the direction of Milan Holan, its constructor, and launched it a short time ago. We were here to race with the others but mainly to test the new vehicle and it proved its qualities. Thanks to everyone for their support, another hard work will guide us to the Dakar 2012 in South America, which we are certainly looking forward to. It is great to play an even role in the race with a factory team,” Ales Loprais said.
It is Ales’ third podium placement in a big international competition. He was 3rd at his Dakar debut in 2007. In 2008 he finished 3rd at Central Europe Rally and a year later he was 3rd at the Silk Way Rally. Last year he finished Silk Way Rally 4th.
The second team’s crew of Tomas Vratny and Bonver Dakar Team concluded the rally 19th at its debut and got a taste how hard the real racing is, Tatra No. 319 managed to finish the race and therefore fulfill its main goal.

Stage 6 of the Silk Way Rally brought only few changes on the track but big ones afterwards. Stage 7 is canceled and therefore the results are final, and after a time penalty on Kabirov Ales Loprais gets to the first place!
The crew of InstaForex Loprais Team started the special as the third truck and left notning to chance. Gradually, Ales Loprais passed Kabirov and Echter but the next course brought mild technical problems with the central inflation system. The problem was fixed in the transfer section to the day’s second special.
“Today I really enjoyed the stage, quite an interesting one. After passing Kabirov and Echter we discovered a problem in the central inflation system. Milan Holan, my mechanic, had to block the whole system and we continued with a critically low tire pressure as punctures were threatening or we could destruct the whole tire. Then we focused on maintaining our second place,” Ales Loprais said.
However, still there was a chance. The leader of the GC, Kabirov, stopped to help the stuck BMW of Alexander Mironenko from the ravine, although the Russian car driver could have been helped by any of Kabirov’s teammates. The young Kamaz drivers were pushing hard, though. Ayrat Mardeev won the stage, his second this year and managed to claim fifth overall to Echter who lost it only by 43 seconds. Karginov placed third but took only 4 minutes off Ales’ margin. A good performance was achieved by both Liaz trucks of KM Racing, with 4th and 8th places. On the other hand, the race is over for Elfrink after a crash and a solid drive of Versluis also got to a premature end due to broken gearbox.
The Bonver Dakar Team maintained its steady pace in its first rally, placing 24th in stage and 19th overall.
