T87 Prominently Displayed at Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance
Thousands of spectators turned out on a beautiful Father’s Day Sunday in Beverly Hills, California for the annual, invitation only Rodeo Drive Concours d’Elegance. This year, themed “the Jet Age” featured two jet-powered cars and a new Lear Jet, with wings removed, parked on the street — the first time ever an airplane has appeared on Rodeo Drive (one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive shopping districts, something the Lear did nothing to diminish). Some one hundred rare and antique automobiles were invited to participate. Prominent among them a 1941 Tatra T87 owned by Dydia DeLyser and Paul Greenstein.
The mostly American spectators were intrigued by the Tatra: a truly rare automobile in the US, many compared the car to the Tucker (one of which, previously owned by the Tucker family themselves, was positioned near the 87), or the Porsche (represented by several vintage examples, as well as a contemporary display from the company) only to learn that the Tatra was first. Many of the Europeans visiting the Concours, on the other hand, recognized the T87 immediately, offering nostalgic stories of their pasts and eagerly asking for details about this car’s production and restoration. The questions most commonly asked overall: “What country made this?” “Is this from Russia?” “Where’s the engine?” Tatra friends, we have more educating to do!

India-made trucks may push Tatra out

Considered as the ‘backbone’ of the Indian Army’s rapid response to any attack along the western front for long, the Czech-built Tatra trucks may not be purchased from now on. The reason: India-built trucks have now improved a lot and could be selected for forthcoming expansion drive or replacements for Tatra trucks, resulting in saving foreign exchange and unhinging India’s reliance on foreign suppliers.
Purchase of Tatra trucks had become controversial and the contract of 1,676 high-mobility Tatra trucks was stopped after former Army Chief Gen VK Singh alleged in February 2012 that there was an attempt to bribe him for clearing the deal. The CBI then booked VRS Natarajan, chief of the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), in April last year. The BEML was the Indian partner of Tatra. A retired Army officer and a private individual have also been booked by the CBI.
Now ending Tatra’s monopoly in India, the Army has completed trials for two types of trucks to replace Tatra – the six-wheeled-drive high-mobility vehicle and the eight-wheeled-drive high-mobility vehicles. The plan is to buy 1,239 units of the first variety and another 255 of the second variety.

A short visit to the Tatra Museum
Hyundai has established a major presence in the Czech Republic, with its plant in Nosovice in the east of the nation producing 300,000 cars per year. Five body styles are produced there, including the three shapes of i30, its baby brother the ix20 and the ix35 soft-roader.
The facility is a major part of the community, employing 3440 people, predominantly local, and being the catalyst for a supply chain that has sprung up to service the demand for parts and raw materials.
It’s fitting that a major car manufacturer should base its operations in the Moravia region of the country, because it has a rich motoring history.
Just half an hour’s drive west of Hyundai’s factory is a museum celebrating Tatra, one of the most famous of the Eastern European car marques.
Born in 1850 as a carriage maker, Tatra embraced car making in 1897, making it the third-oldest motor manufacturer in the world behind Daimler and Peugeot.
Unlike its peers, however, Tatra ceased making cars in the late 1990s and focused on its more successful heavy-truck business.
Due to the old Czechoslovakia’s position within the Communist Bloc, for years Tatra’s products remained relatively unknown in the West, although today there remains a strong cult following for them.
During a visit to Hyundai’s production facility earlier this week, we had the opportunity to detour to the Tatra museum in the middle of Koprivnice, the town where the manufacturer was born.

Long desired by the current owners, this example was sourced in Canada in somewhat dilapidated condition by North American marque specialist Alex Veronac. A comprehensive restoration commenced with him in Canada and then continued and finished in the U.S. at Burnham’s Garage in Delanson, New York. This included refurbishing the bodywork in the original green livery and renewing the interior upholstery with matching green leather, overhauling the mechanics and sourcing any missing detail parts. All told the costs of restoration were some $150,000. Since its rebuild the car has been lightly exercised and in doing so has gained a little age. It should also be noted that its cabin is not carpeted.
At the time of cataloguing and photography, the Tatra was exercised and proven to be ‘on the button’ and eminently usable. For the precise gearshift and responsive performance, let alone the head turning it creates, it is certainly an enjoyable driving experience.
Unquestionably one of the truly iconic and most influential automobile designs of all time, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a T87.

Economist: Tatra truck developed for farmers to replace tractor
Tatroa help bridge the fluctuations of the business cycle production of a new car for farmers to replace conventional tractors, says chairman of Tatra Trucks Petr Rusek. Serial production is set to begin next year.
