A race without windscreen
The struggle between the trucks is tight. The 4th stage brought a lot of passages in canyons, racers climbimg into the mountains to a height of 3500 meters as well as , lots of dried river beds.
It was not the most technical stage of this year, Gerard de Rooy winning with an average of less than 75 km / h. From the first checkpoint, it was clear that Gerard de Rooy and his bonneted atypical Iveco would dominate. Until the mid-stage he kept Miki Biasion at intervals of 15 seconds, closely followed by Van Vliet and Stacey. The situation in the top ten, however stayed balanced with riding a balanced ride continuously between 5th and 10th a place in the stage. It was only a question of who will be in the better shape at the moment. That ultimately proved just Alex, he passed the finish on the 6th place with only minimal distances.
Alex’s ride, though devoid of large fluctuations in time intervals, however, was marked by several circumstances: “The Introduction stage was dusty, fast and hard. Then we got to Karginova Kamaz, relatively long-terrain did not allow overtaking, with the addition of dust. I let a Kamaz pass to be able to put pressure on him, but more fundamental was the fact that in a canyon due to vibrations spontaneously the windshield cracked. We had to kick out and just go on with glasses. This restricted us while driving, while commuting cars we had to cover our faces fromstones from other competitord. But the finish and we got lost too. We will fight on!, he added.
The current course race virtually confirms massive attack Petronas Team de Rooy Iveco, whose riders occupy the first three places in the overall classification. In the stage Kazakhs Ardavičus with his private Kamaz, the former leading rider, dropped four places, just 6 seconds behind Ales Loprais. ten for the first time, this time it was Peter Versluis and Pep Vila.
The overall ranking shows close sequence separation, but they have progressively increasing. The fifth stage, which will include a short 177 km long special, but the legendary white sand will demand the utmost. Competitors will await a very technical stage in the soft and treacherous sand dunes.

The third stage was a technical oneabout ten trucks fighting it out for top positions. The winner was a surprise one. Loprais managed well and climbed to 5 th overall.
In San Rafael the heat was unbearable, the temperature in the bivouac exceeded up to 45 degrees Celsius. Under these conditions many engines suffered from overheating. The stage was slower than the previous one – Alex’s average speed reached 70 km / h.
Ales took off the stage as fifth, and held this position despite dropping back to 8th at CP1. maintained. The whole stage he professionally watched the opposition and finished fifth. His aim is to race steadily, to avoid mistakes and risks and to stay in close contact with the forerunners.
Gerard de Rooy, who was in the lead of most of the stage, lost some time in the end, his teammate Miki Biasion, twice rally world champion taking the laurels. Nikolaev, Ajrat Mardějev and Van Vliet all got lost, the honor of Kamaz rescued by Andrei Karginov and the non-works Astana Kamaz, driven by Arthur Ardavičusem. He is also the most striking new leader. For the last two, the third stage was a breaakthrough, but competition stays close. The first ten saw two new faces peeked into her Joseph Adua with another company, Iveco, in sixth place and Martin Kolomý with Tatra to eighth place. Regrettably, Andre de Azevedo (Tatra) went slowly, after some technical problems, and hopes dashed GINAF’s Wuf van Ginkel also.

The 1949 Czechoslovak GP was the last one held in withy western competitors after the Communist coup of 1949. After 1949, the sport was regarded as too bourgeois and limited to Czechoslovak drivers with incidently East German competitors. The 1949 GP, won by British privateer Petre Whithead, was the debut race for the T 602, the Tatraplan based sportscar. With Bruno Sojka at the wheel, it managed 9th overall, quite a performance as the car was outpowered on the straights by all other competitors.

Pursuant to rider no. 3, Russian Firdaus Kabirov has been handed a penalty of 1 hour and 1,000 euros for speeding during the departure from the bivouac in Stavropol this morning.
As a result, the Kamaz driver, who was the overall leader this evening with a margin of 43:19 minutes over Czech Ales Loprais (Tatra), has been relegated to 2nd in the general classification. This means that, at the end of the 6th special, Czech Ales Loprais (Tatra) leads the 3rd Silk Way Rally, 16′41″ ahead of Russian Firdaus Kabirov (Kamaz).
The victory of Ales Loprais was officially confirmed upon the handling of the protest raised by the Kamaz Team against the time penalty handed to Kabirov. The afternoon ceremony in Krasnaya Polyana concluded the tough event.
The one-hour penalty was given to crew No. 305, Kabirov, Mokeev, Tanin for speeding after leaving the bivouac in Stavropol. The speed is generally checked on the GPS device upon entry of the vehicle to the next bivouac. The infringement was evident enough not to be ignored. Moreover, the whole incident had peculiar circumstances in Stage 6. Ales Loprais lost some time in the stage when repairing the central inflation system. Kabirov entered the stage with a comfortable lead of 52 minutes and he could therefore afford not to hurry too much during the stage. Even being the leading truck, he stopped to help his fellow countryman, Mironenko, to free the BMW from the ravine, although the task could have been done by any of Kabirov’s teammates. At the finish, he was losing 16 minutes to junior Mardeev. The same 16 minutes as was the gap to Ales Loprais after the penalty. He was not aware of the fact that the speeding incident had been recorded.
“Although it is a bit strange that after 6 days of hard battles in the desert the race is decided this way, we are glad for the victory. The overall result is a result of not only times reached in the specials but also by fulfillment of all safety and sporting rules. The new truck showed its potential and we know how to resume its further development. We spend a long time building it under the direction of Milan Holan, its constructor, and launched it a short time ago. We were here to race with the others but mainly to test the new vehicle and it proved its qualities. Thanks to everyone for their support, another hard work will guide us to the Dakar 2012 in South America, which we are certainly looking forward to. It is great to play an even role in the race with a factory team,” Ales Loprais said.
It is Ales’ third podium placement in a big international competition. He was 3rd at his Dakar debut in 2007. In 2008 he finished 3rd at Central Europe Rally and a year later he was 3rd at the Silk Way Rally. Last year he finished Silk Way Rally 4th.
The second team’s crew of Tomas Vratny and Bonver Dakar Team concluded the rally 19th at its debut and got a taste how hard the real racing is, Tatra No. 319 managed to finish the race and therefore fulfill its main goal.

Ales Loprais Wins the Silk Way Rally in Corrected Rankings!

Stage 6 of the Silk Way Rally brought only few changes on the track but big ones afterwards. Stage 7 is canceled and therefore the results are final, and after a time penalty on Kabirov Ales Loprais gets to the first place!
The crew of InstaForex Loprais Team started the special as the third truck and left notning to chance. Gradually, Ales Loprais passed Kabirov and Echter but the next course brought mild technical problems with the central inflation system. The problem was fixed in the transfer section to the day’s second special.
“Today I really enjoyed the stage, quite an interesting one. After passing Kabirov and Echter we discovered a problem in the central inflation system. Milan Holan, my mechanic, had to block the whole system and we continued with a critically low tire pressure as punctures were threatening or we could destruct the whole tire. Then we focused on maintaining our second place,” Ales Loprais said.
However, still there was a chance. The leader of the GC, Kabirov, stopped to help the stuck BMW of Alexander Mironenko from the ravine, although the Russian car driver could have been helped by any of Kabirov’s teammates. The young Kamaz drivers were pushing hard, though. Ayrat Mardeev won the stage, his second this year and managed to claim fifth overall to Echter who lost it only by 43 seconds. Karginov placed third but took only 4 minutes off Ales’ margin. A good performance was achieved by both Liaz trucks of KM Racing, with 4th and 8th places. On the other hand, the race is over for Elfrink after a crash and a solid drive of Versluis also got to a premature end due to broken gearbox.
The Bonver Dakar Team maintained its steady pace in its first rally, placing 24th in stage and 19th overall.

The 16-kilometre special, which was scheduled for tomorrow’s 7th and last stage of the 2011 Silk Way Rally, has been cancelled by the organisers due to a sudden rise in water levels, which has rendered the terrain impassable after strong thunderstorms affected the area at the beginning of the week. Competitors will therefore be transferred to Sochi.
The usual route reconnaissance, which was carried out yesterday by the organiser’s openers, found there had been a sudden rise in water levels on the bed of the Shakhe river, which rendered impassable the route of the last stage in the 2011 Silk Way Rally. After reconnoitring the terrain for the 2nd time this afternoon, openers saw that water levels had not fallen enough and the terrain of the 16-kilometre-long special was still impassable.
The competitors’ safety is paramount for the organisers, so they have decided to cancel the entire timed sector of the 7th stage. Therefore, competitors will be transferred across the 360 km between Maykop and Sochi. The classifications of the 3rd edition of the Silk Way Rally will be made official upon arrival. The final podium ceremony will take place in front of the Krasnaya Grand Hotel, starting with the first car at 3 pm.

On the other hand, Russian drivers continue to flaunt their vice grip on the truck category. Today’s winner Ayrat Mardeev (Kamaz) took the 5th local victory in six stages, which was also his 2nd individual win in this rally. Nevertheless, he only just beat Dutchman Hans Stacey (Iveco, 21 seconds back) and his teammate and fellow Russian Andrey Karginov (Kamaz, 2:42 mins).
After playing the role of the Good Samaritan on the trail, Kabirov lost 16:11 mins to the stage winner, but this is just a small bite off his lead in the general classification, where he now sits 43:19 mins ahead of Czech Ales Loprais (Tatra) and 01:21:55 hours ahead of Karginov.
Tomorrow (Saturday) is the final leg of the 2011 Silk Way Rally. Crews tackle a 227km liaison section and then a short 16km seventh special against the clock. The route runs through a riverbed and includes numerous water crossings. After a further 117km road section, crews arrive in Sochi for what the Monster Energy X-raid Team hopes will be a triumphant podium finish.
