DAKAR STAGE 2

no comment Posted by smitkees
The fastest special stage of the rally, at least for its first part, will also be the one where drivers will have to face the first dunes. And it won’t just be a brief encounter with sand: in the last 100 kilometres, the exploration of the grey dunes of Nihuil will be even more intensive than during previous visits. The sand is more firm there, but the experience will provide a great deal of insight about each of the competitors’ technical skills. In short it will be a veritable test.
STAGE 2: GREY SAND DUNES
The fastest special stage of the rally, at least for its first part, will also be the one where drivers will have to face the first dunes. And it won’t just be a brief encounter with sand: in the last 100 kilometres, the exploration of the grey dunes of Nihuil will be even more intensive than during previous visits. The sand is more firm there, but the experience will provide a great deal of insight about each of the competitors’ technical skills. In short it will be a veritable test.
At CP1, Ales Loprais recorded the best provisional time at the CP after 259 km of the day’s special truck stage. With a total time of 2:05′35″ he only boasts a lead of five seconds over second place, Russian Kamaz driver Ayrat MArdeev.
Not long later it was reported that Russian Anton Shibalov (Kamaz), seventh in the general standings yesterday,  just recorded the best provisional time at the CP. He leads the former stage leader Ales Loprais by 1′50″.
Another seven minutes later the Maz driven by Siarhei Viazovich was in the lead at the CP, with a time of 2:00′21″. The Bulgarian crew have made an improvement of 3′24″ on the previous best time set by Anton Shibalov.
Soon later, Gerard De Rooy was pursued Ayrat Mardeev, only to discover the Russian’s Kamaz in trouble after 313 km, possible on its side. De Rooy stopped to help set his rival back upright, before resuming the special a short while ago. Of course, these are only observations made from satellite positioning thanks to the famous Iritrack system. Mardeev indeed crashed with the crew luckily unhurt.  They are unlikely to be able to resume the special.
In the end, several crew seemed within a chance for victory: Van Vliet, Shibalov.  but in the end it was Karginov (Kamaz) who set the fastest time. A long wait was required to discover the results of the truck special stage, but here it finally is: Andrey Karginov has won with a time of 3:01′50″, ahead of his Kamaz team-mate Dimitri Sotnikov, 1′06″ behind. In third place came the Iveco of Frenchman Jo Adua (+8′34″ behind) to lighten the mood in Team De Rooy. Pep Vila is fourth in front of Siarhei Viazovich.
Helping a competitor in difficulty is one of the fundamentals of the rally-raid discipline. and Gerard de Rooy did not hesitate in helping his rival Ayrat Mardeev. The quarter of an hour spent in helping the crew to get free from the cab and setting the Kamaz upright probably cost him victory today, but such a sporting and kind gesture is worth any number of victories.
The results table, however, says that Shibalov has won. Anyway, Loprais finished half an hour after the winner after loosing his front screen.

The first silver stage for the son Alex

The opening ceremony of this year’s Dakar Rally was spectacular. There was a large event with the representatives of the Argentine Government held in Rosario on Friday. Yesterday, on Saturday, then held ceremonial parade of all participants on the podium, which lasted approximately six hours. Aerobatic aircraft embroidered ornaments above the town, helicopters circled and each of the competitors could enjoy his moment of glory. Interest of the Argentinean fans was huge. Three million of them should gather for the preshow to Rosario.  But that’s nothing compared to the expected ratings in the world. More than 70 television stations in 190 countries will broadcast the race!
Aleš commented it: ”Beautiful atmosphere, Argentines were amazing as usual. We also had a short meeting with the winners of the competition by Budvar and Sherlog. We had dinner together and also talked about the Dakar. But now we are going to the start of the first stage. Suerte – as locals say – good luck!

The first stage ran from Rosario to San Luis (liaison section 629 km, special stage 180 km). After the start in Rosarion the racers went along the Rio Tercero. They drove 405 km through Caňada de Gomez, Villa Maria and Rio Tercero towns. About 50 km after the Rio Tercero started the 180 km long first special stage. It coiled like a snake in the form of the letter S in the foothills of the Sierra de Córdoba with Champui peak, which rises to a height of 2790 metres above sea level. Dirt-stony measured section started at 500 meters above sea level, the end was already located at an altitude of approximately 2100 meters above sea level. Right at the 29th kilometre waited the first control point for the racers. After passing the special stage travelled the racers 224 km to the southwest to San Luis.

504 crew may be satisfied with the gained second place and our pilot Aleš added a personal message: “The first Dakar silver this year. It could be gold, but there was a small navigation mistake. But it is a very nice result compared to the Kamaz team and other major competitors. The stage measured nearly 200 km and the spacing between the first and second place is only ten seconds! This shows the current difficulty and evenness of the category. After a long and busy day with almost 900 km on the road we have finally arrived to the bivouac. The working on the Queen 69, which today went well, started again. Both Tatra now receive the necessary service and the mechanics will not stop until the morning. Dakar has already started. And I, respectively we have started up in a personal life. My son Alex was born a few days before the race. This symbolic stage silver I would like to dedicate to him and his wonderful mother. Although I wanted gold for him (and it was damn close), I believe he can wait a while and we will succeed with the Queen… Thank you all for your good wishes and support that we receive during the race from fans.”

We add our congratulations not only to the team for a great start, but especially Alex. Lot of health, happiness and success in many races that the life will bring to him!

DAKAR STAGE 1: Loprais finished 2nd after being first at CP1.

Czech Aleš Loprais and his “snouted” Tatra took the lead at CP1 (km 28.7) ahead of Dutchman Pieter Versluis and his Man. There was a gap of 1′08″ between the two men, who are followed by Gerard de Rooy’s Iveco (+1′09″) and Ayrat Mardeev’s Kamaz (+1′16″). Martin Kolomý and his Tatra lie in fifth place (+1′19″), with Eduard Nikolaev in sixth (+1′22″). Tomas Vratny was 12th, Artur Ardavichus 3oth. At the wheel of the second Iveco, Hans Stacey is seventh in the provisional classification (+1′24″). Not long later, Kolomy stopped for over 10 minutes, but continued however.

At the finish, it was however Ayrat Mardeev (Kamaz) who finished 1st with Aleš Loprais (Tatra) 2nd, 10 seconds adrift. Van Vliet (MAN) came home 3rd, 21″ slower than today’s winner. Arthur Ardavichus finished 16th.

Loprais latest news

Here we go, 2014 Dakar Rally starts!
End of waiting, start of the first stage of the Dakar Rally is scheduled for today. The way from Rosario to San Luis with the liaison section of 629 km and the special stage of 180 km is waiting for the competitors.
Even before the start the Dakar Rally showed one of its favourite pitfalls – unpredictable weather. Starting point Rosario, the birthplace of the Marxist revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, was exposed to the very hot weather and drought for several weeks. With the arrival of the first participants, however, came the storm. Planes with some teams even had to change the destination airport at the last moment due to weather. However, though lightning, thunder and rain was the pre race program almost perfectly maintained.
loprais uvodni ceremonial
As the Argentine double winner in the quads category Marcos Patronelli pointed out, the race showed its true colours even before the start. “It will be a very challenging Dakar Rally,” said Patronelli. And the race manager Etienne Lavigne confirmed his words: “It will be the most difficult Dakar after the moving to the South America.” Trucks must overcome the route of 5213 measured km, motorcycles 5228 km and cars 5522 km. But the grey sky ceded its place to brilliant sunlight at the time of the parade after the scrutineering and the audience could enjoy the arrival of the big favourites of the 36th year.
Today will fans watch the eager racers at the track. The narrow tracks will require the utmost vigilance from the start. Readiness of the crews will examine even the rocky stretches and jumps. There will be no time to familiarize with the terrain – everyone knows that the total placement may be decided at any time.
Similar feelings of respect for the competition as had our pilot yesterday had even the biggest rivals of Aleš. “Last time I won, but I am not concerned with previous years now. Repeat the triumph is much more difficult,” admitted Eduard Nikolaev from Kamaz. “Kamaz has five fast trucks and five good racers. And there are the others,” pointed out Gerard de Rooy, the other favourite of trucks category and added: “We will go from the start as good as we can and at the rest day we will look how it is going. But we have to think of everything. Failure or defect may cost us the race.”
We would like to conclude today’s news with the Wish to the 504 crew from Mr Miroslav Popelka from Prostějov:
“Good afternoon, starting tomorrow, I will once again sit at the computer long into the night and monitor on the map movement of the Queen 69 at each stage and push you by the will-power to the finish. Whether all medical, technical and other problems avoid you. Overcome all obstacles, so we can celebrate your success after the final stage. I wish this to you, let the hard work and efforts finally fully return in the toughest competition in the world. I wish you solid back (watch out for jumps) and good luck for the whole route!”
Thank you all so much for all the wishes that came to the whole team!

Vladimir Chagin instructs his team

Vladimir Chagin, the undisputed Tsar of the Dakar
By Tim Sturtridge on 4 January 2014 in Rally Raid
We get inside the grill of the most successful single category pilot in the history of the Dakar.
RedBull.com: It was a job well done last time out with three Kamaz trucks on the podium, are you confident of your drivers achieving the same result in 2014?
Vladimir Chagin: I was very satisfied to see our drivers winning all three places on the podium. We even surprised ourselves with this achievement but we soon turned our focus to next year. We want to prove that the results last time out did not come by accident and that our new generation of drivers can be even more successful than the last. I have great respect for our competitors such as Tatra and Iveco and I’m fully aware that they will have been working as hard as we have in preparation for the 2014 Dakar. We’re expecting a very interesting race and we will do our best to delight our fans once again.

Rally Dakar before the start on Sunday

First reports from our team and Aleš Loprais from the place of the race are good:

“Greetings to all from the South America. We are all together again and both Tatra have passed the scrutineering. We have amazing designed helmets from our fan from the Netherland. Ha made the helmets to the whole crew, we took them on the place of the race. The mood is good and the competition is great. I feel respect for all…”

Josef Macháček won even in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2007, when the quads category was assessed only in the context of motorcycles.

Interest for this year’s race route covers the section in Bolivia, which would introduce the participants to the largest salt plain in the world – Salar de Uyuni. Although organizers plan only crossing of the motorcycles and quads (cars and trucks will go a different route), Aymara Indians want to block the race. They fear that the rubbish will remain on the salt plain after the participants and cars will damage the snow-white glossy surface. In contrast, Bolivian president Evo Morales, Aymara himself, hopes that the Dakar Rally will attract the world’s attention to this area and encourage tourism. The salt plain is situated at an altitude of 3600 meters and covers and area of more than 11 000 square kilometres. In November it always becomes a roost of South American flamingos. During the Bolivian section there is rain expected in this area which will turn a crust on the surface to the endless mirror. At the same time, however, increases the danger that the surface will break under the heavier cars. “There is only one route for everyone, and it doesn’t allow the passage of cars and trucks,” said the head of the Dakar Rallly Etienne Lavigne on the official website of the race.

We wish you a nice weekend. Count on with us hours remaining until the heaviest and the most amazing off-road race break out.
