Eduard Nikolaev lost the overall lead yesterday after finishing twentieth, but the Kamaz driver won’t give up just yet and is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at today’s stage. The Russian went through CP3 with 2′23″ on Andrey Karginov and 3′21″ on Hans Stacey. Yesterday’s winner Ales Loprais had a poor start and is in seventeenth place 187 km into the stage.
Eduard Nikolaev had 2′13″ on Andrey Karginov at CP2, but he has since raised his pace to expand his margin to almost five minutes at km 187.
With five stages out of eight under his belt, Eduard Nikolaev and his Kamaz are clearly the fastest in the field, as he showed once more in Iquique today. After putting over eleven minutes on Gerard de Rooy on the finish line, the Russian driver is still in the fight for the overall and has moved back to third place, behind teammates Ayrat Mardeev and Andrey Karginov.

The Africa Eco Race is a race that takes place in the footsteps of the “original” Dakar Rally, i.e. through Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. It started on December 28, 2014 by scrutineering in Saint-Cyprien, France and the first stage began on Dec 30 in Moroccan NadorIn Africa the TATRA brand is represented by Tomáš Tomeček, who runs this year in the main sponsors’ colours – Excalibur Group and Promet Group. His racing truck TATRA 815-2T0R45 4×4.1 VK is, as its pilot says, 100% Tatra, as it is fully equipped with standard units used by the mass production – 12-cylinder air-cooled TATRA engine of 19 liters, 2x turbocharger and 20-speed TATRA 14TS 210L transmission. The front axles are suspended with air bellows with the ATESO shock absorbers The maximum vehicle speed is 155 km/h.
While Kamaz is the top team in the Dakar rally, privateers have been in command in the truck class in the Africa Eco race with Tomas Tomecek and Elisabeth Jacinto (MAN) the dominant competitors. Kamaz however decided to enter two trucks in the Africa Eco race this year as well and promptly has taken over overall leadership.

Loprais experienced the worst day of the rally last friday. After he suffered a puncture and bogged down in the dunes, he lost more than an hour. Saturday’s 335 km from the Chilean city of Iquique in the Atacama Desert, however, he was great, won the stage on his 35th birthday and scored the sixth stage victory on the Dakar career.
The nephew of six-time Dakar winner Karel Loprais defeated the Itatalian Bellina (Ginaf) and Dutchman Gerard de Rooy (Iveco). The superb Kamaz drivers Andrei Karginov, Dmitri Sotnikova and Ajrata Mardeev came home 4th, 5th and 6th.The sixth man of the stage Mardeev however leads by more than twenty minutes overall before Karginov, third is Sotnikov. Nikolayev, long time overall leader, lost over an hour yesterday. Second best Czech rider was in the stage was Martin Kolomý with Tatra in ninth place; he is 9th overall as well.
Loprais comments on the 7th stage:
The sixth stage was black and the seventh one gold now! We started from eleventh place by using a “joker”, who put us right at the start right behind the first 10 teams from the previous day. Everything went well for us and luckily we not met problems from yesterday, after which we are really sorry looking at the result list, but we still keep fighting. First stage victory on this year´s DAKAR at the day of my birthday, made us of course really happy. We have to concentrate for tomorrow, because today we are here at bivouac alone without service team, so we have to make service and small repairs by ourselves. Today we are not able to make a video for you, but if our team will do some one anyway that without us. Here at marathon bivouac teams don´t have any signal for mobile phones, we just can use satellite phone and connection due to overload often collapses. We hope to ensure more information’s for you during tomorrow after finishing the stage and during the day off which is following after.
Eight stage is without connecting part, trucks are going straight to special stage 271 km long. It should be again challenging, full of dunes and sand. Keep your fingers crossed for us and please support us.
Thank you.

The seventh stage from Iquique leading to marathon bivouac without assistance teams and mechanics. First the trucks have to pass 101 km long connection stage followed by special stage measure 335 km.The trucks will once again embark upon a separate marathon stage, with the added bonus of competing on a route which is specifically for them. The leaders’ driving skills in the dunes will make the difference on this first separate day, with long and decisive sandy sections. Once again, they will need to find the right balance between self-control and performance. When they reach their private bivouac, the on-board mechanics will become the key players in this marathon stage.
12.55: Martin Kolomý is determined to end the dominance of the official Kamaz team, which has three trucks in the top 3 overall. The Czech narrowly beat Siarhei Viazovich and Gerard de Rooy at CP3. The Belarusian and the Dutchman also want to end the Russian team’s reign.
13.43: The first leader of this year’s Dakar, Hans Stacey, is now languishing in seventh place overall. However, the 2007 leader still has unfinished business in this Dakar and is on course for a great performance today, beating Martin Kolomý by 19 seconds at CP3.
14.44: Gerard de Rooy is light-years away from the overall lead after a calamitous fourth stage, but today he seems to be on course to add another stage win to his already crammed trophy room. Halfway through the stage, the Iveco driver went through CP4 with almost two minutes to spare over Ales Loprais.
14.47: Hans Stacey and Martin Kolomý, the two fastest drivers at km 78, are nowhere near the lead at CP4. The Dutchman was 24 minutes down and the Czech more than half an hour behind the leader.
15.59: Overall leader Eduard Nikolaev seemed to be treading water these last three days, but the Kamaz driver could crash out of contention today after losing over an hour between CP4 and CP5!
16.23: Ales Loprais was on the hunt for his first win at the 2015 Dakar after finishing fourth three times and third once. His day of glory finally came in Iquique, where he triumphed with over five minutes to spare on Gerard de Rooy. He also moved up to fourth place overall.
16.26: Eduard Nikolaev’s pain was Ayrat Mardeev’s pain, as the latter seized the overall lead after finishing the stage eight minutes behind today’s winner, Ales Loprais. Andrey Karginov’s third place in Iquique was good enough for him to climb to second overall.
Martin Kolomý is determined to end the dominance of the official Kamaz team, which has three trucks in the top 3 overall. The Czech narrowly beat Siarhei Viazovich and Gerard de Rooy at CP3. The Belarusian and the Dutchman also want to end the Russian team’s reign.
