Motoring Memories: Tatra automobiles, 1923-1998.
The Tatra Car’s roots go back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1850 where Ignatz Schustala opened a wagon and carriage shop in the Moravian town of Nesselsdorf, Kingdom of Bohemia. Ignatz Schustala & Co. established a good reputation but had limited finances to expand. It found backing from wealthy industrialist Adolf Raschaka, who unfortunately died in 1877, causing Schustala to flounder until 1881 when financing came from a railway company. Man & Tatra-passion (updated)
Last year October I was approached by the Dutch classic car magazine Klassiek en Techniek for an article about men and their classic car passion. I was reluctant as there are more Dutch people with the same fascination…..but they insisted. They were really interested in why I chose Tatra as a hobby and I was happy to tell them about the uniqueness of the brand’how I sozialised with other Tatra fans, what Tatras I did possess and what other Tatra activities I got involved with.
Last week the eleven photo-four page article was published and is now available in the Dutch tabacconist/magazine shops.

More people suspected in Tatras supply for Czech military
Prague, Jan 14 (CTK) – Another two people besides former Czech defence minister Martin Bartak are suspected in connection with the allegedly manipulated order for Tatra lorries for the military, it ensues from a statement of state attorney Dusan Taborsky who supervises the case.
He said the police have further suspects.
According to CTK’s information, the two persons are Petr Ptacek, from Praga company, and Michal Smrz, a businessman ensuring armament orders.
Ptacek dismisses the suspicion. “It is an absurd and nonsensical accusation. I have the feeling that Tatra managers are trying to dispel many suspicions that have arisen in connection with placing the order for their vehicles without a tender and suspicious agreements on commissions connected with the order” More….
