A new book has been published in German on Eastern-bloc cars. Author is Tatra and Panhard fan Bernard Vermeylen.

Wer an den Ostblock denkt, verbindet damit oft zweckmäßige, schlecht verarbeitete und unzuverlässige Wagen – und nicht unbedingt rassige Sportwagen und elegante Cabrios. Dass es genau die aber sehr wohl gab, zeigt Autor Bernard Vermeylen in seinem neuen Buch „Autos aus dem Ostblock“
Der knapp 300 Seiten starke Band dürfte wohl so einige Vorurteile der Leser zerstreuen. Zwar trifft das Pauschalurteil, Autos aus dem Ostblock seien unsportlich und unbequem, manchmal bestimmt zu. Trotzdem brachten die Ingenieure aus Ländern wie Ungarn, Polen, Rumänien und Tschechoslowakei einige automobile Schätze hervor.

In „Autos aus dem Ostblock“ zeigt der Autor anhand vieler Fotos und Beschreibungen luxuriöse Limousinen wie die ZIL aus der UdSSR und schicke Cabrios wie den IFA F9 (DDR). Auch an putzigen Kleinwägen wie den tschechischen Velorex fehlt es nicht, ebenso wenig wie an Fahrzeugen, die nie in Serienreife gingen, wie die ungarische Surányi – ein Kleinstwagen, der von einem Motorradmotor angetrieben wurde und eher wie ein Spielzeugauto aussah.

Wer noch nie etwas über die Automobilgeschichte des Ostblocks gelesen oder gehört hat, sollte in diesen Band reinschauen – und Fans von Tatra, Lada und Jawa sowieso. Schade nur, dass einige Kapitel sehr knapp ausfallen – das über Bulgarien etwa fasst gerade einmal eine halbe Seite, Fotos vermisst man hier auch.

Ansonsten ist der Band aber sehr schön bebildert, die Qualität der Fotos ist hervorragend, was ja nicht selbstverständlich ist, wenn man die Qualität der Kameras aus dem Ostblock denkt – aber damit wären wir schon wieder beim nächsten Vorurteil.

  A new book by Marian Suman-Hrlebay on Tatra trucks was recently published.  It covers the history of truck production in Kopřivnice 1919 till present and the first Nesselsdorfer truck and steam omnibus of 1900, a 1909 fire truck, trucks on woodgas, tippers, tankers, trailers, box cars and special bodied trucks like ambulances, vans, delivery tricycles and armored vehicles. Further, there are chapters on buses and trolleybuses, unrealized projects etc.
