The hard life of classics behind the Iron Curtain

PozorCoverSept2014

We are happy to inform you that the book “Pozor” is out now. It is not a Tatra book, but a coffeetable book about surviving pre- and early post war cars in the seventies of last century.  The 143 page book consists of a 129 page main section with the photographed classics and a 11 page additional section where some of the photographed cars are compared to restored cars 40 years later.  In the main section the publishers have (almost) chosen for a one photo on a single page  format with additional text. Quality of the b/w photos is very well, as is the print. The lay-out is pleasant and quiet for one’s eyes.

The number of brands spotted in the seventies streets shows a colourful palet in the grey communistic streets. Some foreign vehicles were imported to the protectionistic Czechoslovakia in the thirties, other cars were left  by the fleeing Wehrmacht in the war years. With 22 photo’s on 19 pages(and cover) of  Tatra T 12s, T 57s (including a’s and b’s), T 77s, T 87s, T 97s, T 600s and T603’s, Tatra is generously represented.  Other Czech makes like Aero, Jawa, Praga, Skoda Velorex and Zbrojovka are well represented on another 31 pages. With most photos taken in Czechoslovakia, this is a logical outcome.  Other makes are either German (Adler, Audi, EMW, DKW, Mercedes, Opel, Stoewer, Volkswagen, Wanderer), Austrian (Steyr), Hungarian (Ikarus), Polish (Pobieda), Russian (GAZ, Volga), French (Peugeot), British (Austin, Vauxhall) or American (Chevrolet, De Soto, Dodge, Ford, Plymouth, Pontiac, Studebaker)

Highly recommended to all Eastern Bloc and Tatra enthusiasts!

Hardcover, 21 x 28 cm

All photos are in b/w, english text.

EU countries: Euro 38,50 incl p.p.  other countries US Dollar 65,00 incl p.p..

Enthusiasts of the Technical Museum in Kopřivnice for a long time desire to fix legendary train from 1936. Strela so-called Slovak Although the spring cleaning see through, but most would need to get rid of the rust and restore the interior and drive, which would cost up to twenty million.

“Yes, overhaul is much needed to know, but unfortunately lacks necessary million,” said Director of the Technical Museum in Kopřivnice Lumír Kaválek.
Slovak missile stands outside the museum under the shelter that this national cultural monument protected from the weather a little.
Above varnish increasingly prevails rust, condition of the roof begins to be acute, rehabilitation needed by the interior and drive.
Only basic renovations comes to about six million, if restorers started the Slovak strely thoroughly, suddenly, the amount jumped to about twenty million.
The train, which before World War 2 ahead of the development of many years, belongs to Tatra Trucks. It was bought last year Kopřivnice. A museum with her.
However, the current priority of investment in manufacturing and maintaining employment. “At present, expenditure on restaurant-conservation work we can not afford. Any activity to improve the condition of the train have our support, but at the time of restructuring the company, this support can have a significant financial dimension, “said spokesman Andrej Tatra Trucks Čírtek.
He added that although the rescue of the company on the right track, still struggling to make the Tatras was not just a museum.
Another route is therefore a subsidy. Before about six years ago kopřivnické museum lost in the battle for the support of the Lower Vitkovice areas.
And with other subsidies completely misses the shot. Once the Ministry for Regional Development announced a grant program for the national monument, there were just real estate.
In addition, grant programs for the period 2014-2020, which instead of counties to manage ministries, are not yet known.
“If the bullet did not touch, and lasts even ten years, maybe a little more. But the later the start, the costs will be higher, “said museum director Kaválek.

Italian Tatra

IFMonteRosa

The Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8C Monterosa, bodied by Zagato, was an attempt by the ulta-luxury car maker to get back in the passenger car business after the war. Built in 1947, the car is remarkably like Tatra’s cars, most notably the T87. Look at all these features they both share: rear-mounted V8; long, streamlined four-door design, three headlights, hell just look at those two — they’re like brothers.

Ferdinand Porsche, Joseph Ledwinka, and the invention of the electric hub motor

HubMotors_lede

Ferdinand Porsche’s use of in-wheel electric motors in some of his earliest automobiles, including the Lohner-Porsche Semper Vivus, the first hybrid vehicle, established him as an innovator and an engineering genius and certainly helped launch his career in automobile design and construction. He can’t claim to have invented the in-wheel electric motor, however; that credit should instead go to one of several inventors, including a fellow countryman of Porsche’s who went on to display his own engineering prowess on this side of the Atlantic.

Like Porsche and distant relative Hans Ledwinka, Joseph Ledwinka was born in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically Vienna, but unlike the other two men, Joseph Ledwinka emigrated to America in 1896 to work for the Chicago Coach and Carriage Company, likely as a draftsman or engineer. Ledwinka would eventually become an automobile engineering juggernaut in his own right; in the 1920s and 1930s, through his association with Budd, he would go on to file patents for dozens, if not hundreds, of methods of body construction and contribute to the development of all-steel automobile bodies and unit-body structures.

Studebaker studied Tatra’s technology

no comment Posted by smitkees

T26-30MeadowBrook

The 1930 Tatra T26/30 was a very important vehicle in the companies history, as it was the forerunner of all Tatra trucks to come with rear-wheel independent suspension, a central tube chassis and an aluminum, air-cooled boxer-type engine driving through a transmission with six forward and two reverse speeds. The axle differentials can be locked and one of the rear shafts can be disengaged. In total, there were only 181 T26/30 trucks produced with various bodies and only five or ten are known to survive.

This truck was ordered by a Mr. V. Meister of New York, acting as a front for Studebaker, which was manufacturing trucks for the U.S. Army and wanted to investigate Tatra technology. The current owner discovered the car for sale in Ohio in a crate with the Studebaker name. It has less than 5,000 original miles and the engine still runs very well.

Sincere hearts gusts Czechoslovak workers, enthusiastic eyes of tens of thousands of residents of Prague, loud public speech, then the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow and the hospital for many years disgrace and oblivion, accidental discovery and serious historical investigation – all came together in the history of this small car, designed the great leader.
The last holiday that country widely celebrated under Stalin, began on the occasion of the anniversary of his 70th birthday, came on December 21, 1949. However, the birthday of the Secretary of the CPSU (b), the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the Generalissimo of the Soviet Union IV Stalin was a holiday not only for our country, but also an event truly global scale. This is not surprising. In the postwar years, Joseph Stalin – unquestionably the most influential politician in the world: the winner of fascism, the owner of the atomic bomb, the leader of the world communist movement. Neither U.S. President Harry Truman nor British Prime Minister Clement Attlee in 1949 did not have the political weight, as Joseph Stalin. Happy Anniversary congratulated him literally all over the world, and primarily, of course, the People’s Democracies: Bulgaria, Hungary, East Germany, Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia
Commemorative gifts to Stalin, hundreds and thousands of craps in Moscow. Stalin “and publishes a long list of members of the Committee. Opened its director Grigory Alexandrov and tractor driver Pasha Angelina and completed composer Dmitri Shostakovich and weaver Natalia Yarygin. That Committee will take for the whole month all the gifts in the name of Stalin. At first, they are placed in the museum of the Revolution on Gorky Street – current Tver. The closer the coveted day December 21, the more newspaper articles devoted to the anniversary. Writer Boris Polevoy prints in “Pravda” article on display in the museum gifts from all over the “great love for the Bolshevik party, led by Comrade Stalin hands to manufacture them. People who worked on them, invested in these gifts of his heart, the flame of your soul, your dreams and aspirations. ” Poem, “December 21, 1949″ Joseph Vissarionovich devotes poet Anna Akhmatova:  On the day of new year teacher and friend
Song bright votes sing -
Let around raging blizzard
Or mountain violets bloom.  And the second city of the Soviet Union
republics All friendly city
workers and those that stifle ties,
but whose free speech and whose soul proud.  And their thoughts freely fly to the capital of glory,
to high Kremlin – fighter for the eternal light,
Departure at midnight hymn majestic sweeps
And the whole world sounds like help and greetings.  Not far behind, and Czechoslovakia. People do without the socialist republic of poetry, but like all the fraternal peoples, sends many gifts – hand-woven carpet, huge gilded vases, figurines, weapons, a set of pipes, wine collection, functioning railway layout, etc., etc., etc.. The best samples of their products sent to Moscow all Czech companies, including the three major automobile plant country: Letov, Skoda and Tatra. As with any gift, Put each anniversary offering original and unique. Regular serial “Tatraplan” factory Tatra cut lengthwise and crosswise, making a spacious and amazingly swift convertible beige color combined with beauty of genuine leather red. Inspired by the universal impulse, the artist draws for her new grille and chrome decor, makes it more elegant bumper recreates dashboard adds guards on the rear fenders and unlike serial invents the wheel, for which, in his opinion, will certainly keep Stalin himself . Incarnation of the car in the metal masters trust the best – tinsmiths, cabinetry, obivschikam, motorists, collectors. Second so luxurious “Minor” at the factory will never collect.
