Tatra at International Concours d’élégance Het Loo
On september 4&5 2010 the gates of Royal Palace Het Loo will open again for the 9th Concours d’élégance Paleis Het Loo.
With the usual Royal Sprint, Royal Paddock, Royal Fair, National Autovisie Concours and of course the International Concours d’élégance, all in a brand new setting, the organisers hope to offer a spectacular Classic Car Event on the royal grounds the Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn. http://www.concourselegance.com/
The main themes for 2010 will be 100 years Alfa Romeo, 75 years Jaguar. Some streamlined cars will be on show at the International Concours like an Adler Autobahn and Kees Smit’s Tatra T77a. The jury includes well know names like Tom Tjaarda, designer of the De Tomaso Pantera, the 1977 Ford Fiesta. He is the son of Dutch born John Tjaarda, designer of the Sterkenburg series and Briggs dreamcar, the forerunner of the Lincoln Zephyr. http://www.coachbuilt.com
Ejector cooled T603B6 to race in Goodwood
On Thursday August 19, 2010 John Haugland, Norwegian rally star of the eighties and former Skoda Motorsport works driver, came to visit Kopřivnice. He was accompanied by colleague Arne Berg and the director of Subaru Norway, Peter Solberg. Both distinguished guests will be with team members of the Tatra 603 team to test the the T603 with an all new ejector cooled engine, especially built for the Goodwood revival meeting held on Sept. 17-19.
Tatra 603 Team was established in 1991, when the Hajdušek brothers renovated an old Tatra 603 and restored another one to Tatra 603 B5 condition with which the team regularly attends races and hillclimbs. Another car raced by them with support from its parent company is the ECORRA Tatra V8 Sport.
After racing the T603B5 at Goodwood last year, the team looked for more power and decided to build an ejector cooled engine as used in the T603B5 (T603B6)on rare occaisions in the sixties, making an incredible and breathtaking sound. The new engine was built in cooperation with ECORRA Koprivnice. On friday, August 20, the ejector cooled engine will be tested on Tatra’s oval, the Polygon. The Norwegians will conclude their visit on saturday when they will visit the Koprivnice Tatra museum.

Czech U.S. embassy invites classic Tatras in 2011
Inspired by Paul Greenstein’s T87 winning the New York Times car competition, the Czech Embassy in Washington, DC, USA has decided they would like to have Tatras at their next open house in May of 2011 (I do not have the exact date handy). Anyone who cares to bring their Tatra to the event is more than welcome.
According to Andrea Pohl, who is the contact person for this event, the Czech Embassy receives about 3,000 visitors at its open house every year. She feels the Tatra display would bring even more. Anyone who has an interest is welcome to contact Andrea at: andreastaceypohl@yahoo.com or phone at (202) 274-9129.

John Long’s T77a shines at Pebble Beach
And there you have it, ladies and gentleman, the 2010 edition of the grandiose Pebble Beach concours d’Élégance has come to a close. The 60th anniversary of the Concours coincided with many other many milestones including the 100 years of Alfa Romeo, 75 years at Jaguar, 60 years of Porsche in North America, Pierce-Arrow and the designs of Ghia.
The event also welcomed some Hot Rods including lakesters and Bonneville racers and Indy Cars. What the event also did was introduce me to the true nature of a Concours d’Élégance. The Quail event was loaded with lovely Ferraris, Maseratis, Mustangs and a few oddball cars from the Italian designer Zagato. This was an agglomeration of cars you might see on the road occasionally with a few exceptions obviously. It was also a collection that cattered mostly to the swinging 60s and disco 70s. Again, with a few exceptions.
The 18th hole of the famed Pebble Beach Golf Course was covered in treasures from the 10s, 20s, all the way to the 60s. Cars from such brands as Duesenberg, Cord, Pierce-Arrow, Bugatti, Packard, Lister, Miller were basically common-place. All of them were parked along-side Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, Bentley and other storied brands. What a sight!
What’s important to note is that all of these pristine ultra-rare mega-expensive cars were all in running condition. I witnessed a few judgings including that of a Tatra T77a and they really do check everything. Some cars stood out because they were not a “10”. The trend of the preserved or unrestored classic seems to be growing and I could not agree more with having a car in its original state as opposed to being restored to better than new conditions.
The event Sunday, which drew 50,000 participants and spectators (entry: $175 a ticket), was the grand finale of a frenetic classic car week that included vintage sports car races, an 80-mile tour and the high-roller RM Auction in Monterey, in which collectors — mostly men — shelled out a total of $68 million for couture cars that twirled like models on a runway.
Some 255 entries and 29 classes of cars were assembled along with their famous gearhead fans, like Jay Leno, whose latest obsessions are chronicled on jaylenosgarage.com, and collectors like Sam Mann of Englewood, N.J., inventor of widely used ear piercing devices, who has won “Best of Show” four times. Mr. Mann’s friendly rival is Jack Nethercutt, a six-time winner and the chairman and president of Merle Norman Cosmetics Inc., whose family has an eponymous automotive museum in Sylmar, Calif. Like many other men here, he wore a Panama hat.
“You see the rarest of the rare,” Mr. Leno observed after studying the engine of a tubular-looking silver 1938 Tatra Type 77a Limousine. “It’s cheaper than crack or hookers,” he said of his hobby. “When you come home reeking of transmission fluid, your wife knows where you’ve been.”

TRUK 2010 Kent rally
The UK Tatra club organized their annual event near Dover, Kent this year. Held last weekend and organised by its treasurer Peter Milbank-Jones and his wife, it attracted several T603s and T 613s and even one mainland Tatra made the trip. The Tatra fans enjoyed a combination of great scenery, unchallenging mileage, interesting visits, cost-effective accommodation and personal hospitality.

Beskydy Rally Invitation
The Tatra Veteran Club Koprivnice invites you at their annual rally in the first weekend of September.
The TVCC rally is the mother of all Tatra rallies and is organised for the 41st time! Quite an achievement. Many Czechs and Slovaks usually present their freshly restored Tatras to the broad Tatra public for the first time and it is about the only Tatra rally that is attended by veteran Tatra trucks as well.

NOTAM Danish Tatra meeting cancelled
Despite our efforts to put together an interesting program and to present many Danish attractions, we have not succeeded in getting enough applications for our NOTAM meeting in Denmark on 26-29 August 2010.
With great regret we must therefore cancel the meeting.
Yours sincerely, Tatra Tatra Team Denmark. svca@post3.tele.dk
