A short visit to the Tatra Museum

no comment Posted by smitkees

Hyundai has established a major presence in the Czech Republic, with its plant in Nosovice in the east of the nation producing 300,000 cars per year. Five body styles are produced there, including the three shapes of i30, its baby brother the ix20 and the ix35 soft-roader.

The facility is a major part of the community, employing 3440 people, predominantly local, and being the catalyst for a supply chain that has sprung up to service the demand for parts and raw materials.

It’s fitting that a major car manufacturer should base its operations in the Moravia region of the country, because it has a rich motoring history.

Delphinand605TatraMuseum

Just half an hour’s drive west of Hyundai’s factory is a museum celebrating Tatra, one of the most famous of the Eastern European car marques.

Born in 1850 as a carriage maker, Tatra embraced car making in 1897, making it the third-oldest motor manufacturer in the world behind Daimler and Peugeot.

Unlike its peers, however, Tatra ceased making cars in the late 1990s and focused on its more successful heavy-truck business.

Due to the old Czechoslovakia’s position within the Communist Bloc, for years Tatra’s products remained relatively unknown in the West, although today there remains a strong cult following for them.

During a visit to Hyundai’s production facility earlier this week, we had the opportunity to detour to the Tatra museum in the middle of Koprivnice, the town where the manufacturer was born.

Parade schnittiger Karossen in Koepenick

In Mittenwalde sorgte dafür Birgit Thinius vom Oldtimerverein.

TFIBerlin2013

Over fourty members of the Tatra Freunde International Austrian Tatra club gathered this year in Koepenick, Berlin, Germany for the annual TFI meeting.  They took over thirty Tatras with them, the oldest one a T 57 sport, the youngest one a T 613/4.  Germany’s Stefan Ebert’s frehly restored T 87 debuted in the rally. Though the weather forecast foresaw doubtfull weather, the rally was blessed by pleasant weather, a good choice of restaurants, several special tests including karting, a ride in a classic tram and a visit to the oldest boat lift of Europe, bridging the height diffrences of neighboring river basins.

Watch this topic for more photo’s coming soon.

Next year’s TFI rally will be held in Noordwijkerhout, Netherlands from May 29 – June 1 2014. Info: smitkees@planet.nl

The Tatra Freunde International club showed a cute T 57 sport

P1000208

Dutchman Frans van Haren showed his wonderful T 80 convertible

P1000209

A T 87 from a Swedish museum was put up for sale

P1000228

A T 52 long chassis model was auctioned at the Essen Coys auction.

Offered at No Reserve, this 1934 T52 has had a thorough mechanical overhaul which included removing the engine, with the rods, pistons, clutch, rear axle, suspension and brakes all checked and either repaired or replaced. For example, one rod was replaced, 4 new rings were fitted and all valves polished and the starter motor was repaired along with the carburettor cleaned and regulated.
Further work included repairs to the speedometer and other dials on the dash and all mechanical items were cleaned from rust, dirt and oil.
Due to the methodical overhaul of the mechanics, we are informed the car is running with the bodywork in original condition and showing years of patination which could either be left as is, or of course restored to its former glory.
