At the moment the 26th edition of the classic world fair TECHNO-CLASSICA comes into the hot preparatory phase until the opening on 26th March with the preview-, press- and professional-visitors day. Already now all exhibitor spaces in the 20 halls and at the four open spaces are nearly now reserved. More than 1,250 exhibitors from more than 30 nations have already booked. More than 220 classic-clubs and communities of interests make the TECHNO-CLASSICA also in 2014 to the world greatest club-meeting of the vintage-cars and the young-timer scene.

After the TECHNO-CLASSICA in Essen started as first great ambitious classic fair 25 years ago, it has set trends of the vintage-car scene yearly and had become to the most important meeting place and market of the international classic scene.

This year’s TECHNO-CLASSICA will become to the world greatest historical show of the German as well as of the international automobile manufacturer too, and can even beat the brand record of the last year- with 27 vehicle brands vehicle manufacturers present themselves as never before. At this it is not only the point to entertain the audience and to impart historical knowledge. In the fore is the credible representation of the brand values too, at which the tradition and the company history play enormous roles.

For the first time the Italian design- und body-manufacturing company Zagato is represented at the TECHNO-CLASSICA. The company, established in 1919 in Rho near Milan as Carozzeria Zagato, belongs to the oldest, still today in Italy existing body-manufacturing companies. On the occasion of the 95th company birthday, the TECHNO-CLASSICA organiser S.I.H.A. presents in Halle 6 legendary Zagato-creations on the basis of Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia etc. – completed by fascinating exhibits at the Zagato company stand.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the existence of the brand with the trident, Maserati will also present itself at the TECHNO-CLASSICA with an official company stand for the first time – and fascinate with historical as well as new Maserati sports cars. Parallel the TECHNO-CLASSICA organiser S.I.H.A. shows in hall 6 a spectacular special exhibition with the title “100 Years Maserati – La Tradizione Italiana Sportiva 1914 – 2014″ – with Maserati-highlights, ward-robed by Zagato.

The third in the alliance of the TECHNO-CLASSICA company premiere is the sports car brand AC, originally British. Since 2009 the trademark rights are at AC Automotive in the Baden-Württemberg Straubenhardt, which let live on the legend AC with handmade sports cars of the type AC Cobra Mk VI in the Thüringen Heyda. German engineering with GM-V8-engines with up to 640 HP connects tradition and modern. For the first time AC presents itself in 2014 at the TECHNO-CLASSICA with a stand, laid out by the AC Europe-distribution Formula Automobiles.

From A as AC up to Z as Zagato the automobile manufacturers present which status they attach to the representation of their histories towards the TECHNO-CLASSICA audience, with their most lavish managed presence: As already in the past years the German automobile manufacturers are represented with large historic stands, with it the most important international vehicle companies. A lot of manufacturers present entire model-ancestral lines – also concerning single historical topics – and compare current models with historic vehicles. Some companies already have announced first information concerning their appearance – here in alphabetical order:

• AC Automotive shows the new AC Mk VI in hall 3 in two specimens – and demonstrates the two-seater, now fired by Chevy-V8-engines (instead as former by Ford-engines), on great monitors in operation.

• The topic of the Alfa Romeo company stand in 2014 is: “60 Years Alfa Giulietta”- put in the lime-light by some historical exhibits of the Alfa-evergreens and supplemented by new models. Second highlight are the sporting model-variants “Quadrifoglio Verde”, from which one can see this year also current re-engineered new model ranges.

• Audi looks back on “100 years motor sport in identification of the four rings” – and illustrates the exiting history of the Audi-, Horch-, Auto Union-, DKW- and NSU-motor sport with overall eight historical racing cars and two racing motorcycles in hall 7 on good 700 square meters. In hall 7.1 the Audi-club International presents itself, the founded association of more than 40 Audi-clubs and clubs of the predecessor brands.

• The Autostadt GmbH (Ltd) deals in hall 7 thematically with the “Time turn at Volkswagen”. The car-experience world with the greatest number of visitors demonstrates the transition of the air-cooled mono-culture to the model variety in the 1970ies by seven historical interesting pairs like Golf 1 / Käfer 1302; Golf 1 Cabrio / Käfer 1303 Cabrio; Scirocco Group 2 / Racing- or Rally-Käfer and Passat 1 Variant / Type 3 (VW 1500) or Type 4 (VW 411) Variant.

• Traditionally the BMW Group occupies with the brands BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce the whole hall 12 – and organises the presentation with more than 20 automobiles with the assistance of the clubs, which put themselves and their performance in the lime-light there as well. Two great topics at BMW are in the focus: With “90 Years titles and championships” the Munich recall to their long and successful racing tradition, and under the keyword “Lightweight” the white-blue brand presents fascinating examples of automobile lightweights.

• “Ford Coupé and Cabriolet” is the motto of the Ford-stand in hall 3, which will also laid out in close cooperation with the Ford-brand-clubs also in this year. And with probably four exhibits Ford celebrates the anniversary “50 years Ford Mustang”.

• Maserati shows with overall six old and new models of the model ranges Ghibli and Quattroporte highlights of the 100 years history of the brand with the trident. The official company presentation is supplemented by the special exhibition in hall 6, arranged by the TECHNO-CLASSICA organiser S.I.H.A., which exhibits spectacular Maserati-types with Zagato-bodies.

• Mercedes-Benz continues the tradition of especially spectacular history-presentations at the TECHNO-CLASSICA this year under the title “Magic moments – 120 Years motor sport”. On the huge, 4,800 square meters large company area in hall 1 the brand with the star shows in total 13 Grand Prix-cars (incl. Indy Cars), eight racing- and touring-sport vehicles, six DTM (German-Touring-car-Masters)-vehicles, five Rally-cars and four special vehicles – from racing transporter up to the F1 Safety-car. Additionally all 17 official German Mercedes-Benz-Clubs (with exception of the Cross-country-car-club), the Mercedes-Benz-classic-centre and some Mercedes-Benz classic partner-ship enterprises present themselves.

• MINI, since 1994 taken over as brand of the Rover Group of BMW, builds since 2001 the new, modern MINI and continues by this the tradition of the classic. At the this year’s TECHNO-CLASSICA the new brand MINI recalls to one of the greatest success of the “old” Mini – on its sensational success at the Rally Monte Carlo 50 years ago.

• “110 Years Rolls-Royce Motor Cars” is the motto of the brand Rolls-Royce, which belongs to the BMW-Group, at the TECHNO-CLASSICA. About the exhibits, shown in hall 12, the company remains silent – but also this year one will see fascinating automobiles with the “Flying Lady”on the radiator.

• The Czech car make Škoda, since 1991 belonging to the Volkswagen-Group, recalls with totally 12 great-exhibits, which are traditionally located at the stand in the VW-Group-hall 7, on the 119 years eventful history of the vehicle building in Mladá Boleslav. The motto: milestones of the Škoda-History. As well it is a tradition that Škoda Germany provides its stand in Essen also to the Škoda museum in Mladá Boleslav and the Škoda Oldtimer IG e. V. (community of interests registered association).

• “Volvo at Speed”- under this generic term Volvo Personvagnar AB puts its appearance this year at the TECHNO-CLASSICA. Half-a-dozen Volvo-racing-vehicles fascinate the TECHNO-CLASSICA visitors in hall 3. To the exhibits probably belong the PV 544, which 1965 won the Safari Rally in Africa, the Volvo Amazon-winner-vehicle of the Rally Acropolis as recreation, an 850 Estate of the British Touring Car Championship and the winner vehicle of the Swedish-touring-car-championship 2013, a Volvo S60 of the company team Polestar.

Traditionally also a lot of classic-clubs and communities of interests use the TECHNO-CLASSICA to show themselves and their performances to the expected more than 190 000 visitors. With more than 220 presentations they make the “World fair for vintage-, classic-, & prestige, motor sport, motorcycles, spare parts and restoration – world-club meeting” to the to world greatest classic club-forum. A lot of them are participating since the first fair in 1989, as for example the “VW Type 3 connoisseurs”or the Borgward IG (community of interests).

Just one meets at the TECHNO-CLASSICA – since the first, at that time still two-days fair 25 years ago, the numbers of visitors increased continuously and became more and more international. From 30,000 at the beginning, became more than 190,000 visitors in 2013. For the coming TECHNO-CLASSICA the organisers expect an increase again. Also for exhibitors the pulsating classic-world fair became more and more attractive from year to year – as in 1989 250 exhibitors were still distributed over six exhibition halls, so already now all spaces of the 20 halls and of the open space are almost booked by more than 1,250 exhibitors. And they become more and more international too: In the meantime the specialised suppliers come not only from all over Europe, but from overseas as well – so, among others, also exhibitors from North- and South-America and even China present their range. About 2,500 high-quality collector’s automobiles will be up for sale – as many as nowhere else.

Furthermore are so many restorers, suppliers, suppliers of car literature, spare part dealers, accessories sellers, clock- and technology dealers, artists and art dealers, and not at least model car suppliers are present at the TECHNO-CLASSICA as at no other classic show worldwide. At the five-day fair one can see everything, really everything, around vintage cars and young-timers. So the classic-scene meets again at the TECHNO-CLASSICA in Essen from 26th March (Preview-, press- and professional-visitors day) until 30th March 2014 - Share the Passion!

Another story on Pebble Beach & Tatra

Tatras named featured marque for 2014 Pebble Beach Concours

If there is an official sign of a foreign marque’s “arrival” as a collector car in the American classic-car community, it is arguably the granting of its own class at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The distinction of a featured class has traditionally been bestowed upon very exclusive makes and models. For instance, the 2011 edition of the concours’ featured classes included Maharaja cars, along with Mercer and Fiat. If you’re drawing a blank on the first two, you’re not alone — there aren’t that many ex-Maharaja Rolls-Royce cars in the country, and unless you’re into antique-car tours you probably couldn’t tell a 1919 Mercer from a 1914 Sheffield-Simplex. That almost makes the addition of Tatra to the 2014 list of featured cars seem like a belatedly discovered omission, given that this Czech manufacturer produced more than 100,000 cars and trucks, dating back to 1897

There’s more to the company than imposing government cars moving through the dark of night in Prague. Early on, Tatra specialized in luxury cars that were incredibly advanced for their day. Tatra produced the first aerodynamic car in the world in 1934 in the form of the Tatra T77, a large rear-engined V8 sedan that took advantage of wind-cheating surfaces and engine-cooling scoops. Under the direction of chief engineer Hans Ledwinka, Tatra developed even more advanced cars, cars that arguably influenced the design and engineering of Volkswagen and Porsche before and after the outbreak of the World War II. After the war, Tatra created unforgettable designs like the T600 Tatraplan and T603, staying true to its air-cooled rear-engined V8 roots, carrying over the lessons learned from those designs into what is considered to be its final distinct model, the Vignale-styled Tatra 613 of 1974.

Truth be told, Tatra’s passenger cars really only gained classic status on their home continent with the fall of the Berlin Wall. Up until that time, the marque was cloaked in the same mystique that shrouded other cars created in Eastern Europe. Or in Tatra and Škoda’s case, they got caught on the wrong side of the border when lines were redrawn and allegiances changed. But unlike makes such as ZiL or GAZ, Tatras were already known in the West thanks to their breathtaking looks that channeled steampunk cool–before “steampunk” was a word — in addition to combining novel engineering solutions with a streamlined design language. So its turn as a featured marque at Pebble is perhaps one of the most delayed forms of recognition.

Believe it or not, quite a few examples of Tatras can be found in North America, with a total count numbering just below 100. The Lane Motor Museum in Nashville is a majority stakeholder of sorts, but quite a few models have been scattered throughout private collections, with the iconic T603 perhaps enjoying a plurality among stateside Tatras, followed by its older and rarer T77 and T87 siblings. The earliest and the latest models might be the hardest to find, presuming you come across any at classic car events at all, though Tatras themselves are not as uncommon a sight at concours events as they were a decade ago. For example, a 1938 Tatra T77A belonging to John Long of Toronto took Best in Show at the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance in 2009, a couple years after appearing in the well-received modernism exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. And, in 2012, the Czech embassy even held an event on its lawn that featured a number of Tatra cars and trucks. So while it’s taken a long time for Tatra to arrive in the U.S., its engineering and history have amazed car fans for generations.

The 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will take place Aug. 17, 2014.

Crich (UK) cancels popular classic events

no comment Posted by smitkees

T613Crich2006A series of dedicated marque days for classics held at the National Tramway Museum in Crich, Derbyshire has been cancelled for 2014.

Owners of Morris Minors, Minis, Volkswagen Beetles and Type 2s and fans of Eastern Bloc classics have all expressed disappointment at the loss of the events at the museum.

Laura Greaves, the Marketing & Business Development Executive at Crich said: “Our visiting vehicle weekends have shown a steady decrease in attendance, so the decision was made to discontinue them to concentrate our resources on an enhanced ‘Classic Transport Gathering’ in August as an alternative.”

Phil Dust from the Yugo Zastava Owners Club said: “it’s a massive shame. I missed it last year for the first time in years and was really looking forward to attending this year.”

Founder of the SALT rally for Cold War classics Allen Walker added: “from an Eastern Bloc car perspective it’s a disaster. Apart from the SALT event there is now no other collective event for these cars, and the loss of Crich is more poignant as it’s such a perfect venue.”

Classic Car Weekly contributor and Trabant owner Dominic Russell-Price summed it up: “Crich is missing a real trick here. This year is the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and they could have done something amazing.”

Owners of Eastern Bloc classics, Morris Minors, VWs and Minis are encouraged to attend the new Classic Transport Gathering at Crich on 23-25 August.

Tribute to Tatras to take place at Pebble Beach

no comment Posted by smitkees

Tatra T77 ad

Tatra may not enjoy the same familiarity as other automakers of the 20th century, but the Eastern European firm contributed many an engineering advance to the automobile world, some of them little recognized until decades after the fact. Next August, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will pay tribute to Tatra by giving the under-appreciated automaker its own display category.

Nowadays, Tatra models continue to enjoy a loyal following among collectors who appreciate their innovative designs and advanced styling, and the Classic Car Club of America formally recognizes a number of Tatras (1927-1948 Models T70, T70A, T80, T77, T77A and T87 with prewar styling) as Full Classics. Though individual Tatra models have appeared at Pebble Beach in the past (most notably in 2006, when a Tatra Type 80 owned by Evzen Majoros took the Chairman’s Trophy), the marque has never before had a dedicated class. For 2014, it will join the likes of Ruxton, the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, Steam Cars and Maserati (celebrating its 100th anniversary) on the greens at Pebble Beach, finally getting (some of) the recognition it deserves.

The 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will take place August 17. For more information, visit PebbleBeachConcours.net.

The story behind the Human Cannonball Tatraplan

no comment Posted by smitkees

Human Cannonball Tatra T600

Oh, it does blow a bit of smoke (Castrol R)…and it doesn’t run air-cleaners…BUT(T) you can use the fan to slice your cheese!

This just in from the owner of the 1.5 1950 Tatra T600 project:
“Hey there,
I wanted to thank you for posting the “ambitious” Tatra project on the site. I bought the lot and with the help of a friend hauled it all back to my spread and started unpacking and sorting.
Quite the “Mother Lode” indeed. I have sold a few extra bits to hungry Tatra owners trying to complete their restorations, and managed to buy another lot of parts from someone else and quickly am finding myself in the used Tatra parts business! As for the main car itself, I recently spent some time assembling it and preparing it for display at the annual VW Classic in Irvine, California this past weekend.
In hopes of blowing some VW minds I decided to give it a slight drop job and bolt on some custom VW wheels on the front. And to fit in with the VW Freak Show theme of the main display this year, I hand painted some faded signwriting on it to make it appear as it was a promotional car for a fictional Human Cannonball performer, “The Amazing Karaznov” of the Moscow Circus Company.
The response was truly epic and the opportunity to show the VW crowd that not every air cooled, rear engine, swing axle trans cars came out of Germany and to tell the story of dear Ferdinand Porsche and his “looking over the shoulder” of Tatra designer Hans Ledwinka to build the Beetle, and the resulting lawsuit that has been well hidden from VW fans.
The drop job was all bolting-unbolting, no permanent modifications were made, and the paint is just paint. The car is far from being a driver, but now that I can stand back and look at it as a whole, not a box of parts, it is much more inspirational. I was tempted by offers to buy at the event, and I battle internally with the desire to restore or modify. With the spare bits I have I feel I could handle some mild mods to drivetrain and suspension and still have everything
needed to return to stock “someday” and I have morals that would keep me far away from wild top chops or really wild stuff.
The design of the car is truly amazing and each and every time I look at it, I smile. Now with it lowered and graphic’d I even giggle a little.
Great car and great fun…what it is all about.
Thanks again!
Cheers!
Randy C.”
