Dakar 2021: Stage 6. Buggyra drivers hit by mechanical problems. Loprais (Praga) video
It was a difficult stage for both Tatra Buggyra Racing crews. “It was very challenging today. From the 20th kilometre, we got a weird noise in the cabin and from the 60th kilometre, we completely lost cabin dampers. After that, all the hits went directly to us. Also, this stage was pretty rough, so we had to slow down a bit. We couldn’t keep up like that. And then, by the end of the stage, we also lost power, so we had to go around the dunes. However, now we have a rest day ahead of us, so we can put it all together again,” said the mechanic David Hoffmann.
“I’m not tired, but I feel every bone in my body. It was busy and I believe that the guys will put the truck together. We could use a bit more luck for the 2nd half,” added Ignacio Casale.
The other crew had to deal with some technical issues as well. Martin Šoltys, who finished in 14th place, had to change a cracked steering rod. Then, the Tatra Phoenix got stuck and the crew had to dig the truck out. However, a Russian Kamaz repaid the debt to Šoltys. “On the 70th kilometre, we got stuck on soft sand. We began to dig, and the first vehicle to stop was a Kamaz. So, the karma has returned. It took a while to fix the steering rod, so I’m glad that we’ve made it here. It was a long day,“ said Martin Šoltys.
On Saturday, the crews will enjoy a rest day. However, the mechanics are going to work around the clock. They have only one day to put everything together, as the second half of the Dakar Rally is going to be very difficult.

Tomáš Tomeček still going strong
Tomáš Tomeček – 100% Tatra, is at the finish of the 5th stage of the Dakar Rally 2021 and greets you with the crew from a 267 km long connecting point to the bivouac. There were dunes in the last section of today’s special and you just can’t go through them quickly in the dark. He still has 19th place in the stage and in the overall ranking it looks like a move to the 17th place – he will definitely jump over Tománek, who resigned today, and he should also go ahead of van den Brink (Volvo), who lost six minutes after yesterday. . It holds first place in the category of quick assists with an overview. But the main thing is to be on hand for South Racing team clients!
A video impression of the construction of the 2020 Tatra stand at Retromobile, Paris + the accompanying calendar offered!

Calendar 2021 – Tatra in Paris
In February of 2020 a grand event took place in Paris, the kind that
only takes place every few decades: an exhibition covering Tatra cars
from the very beginning up until the final passenger car model. The idea
of having a large Tatra exhibition at Rétromobile in Paris had been
brewing for a number of years. The heart-warming thing about this
initiative is that it was hatched by French collectors and fans. They
decided to introduce the public to Tatra’s rich history as well as such
stories as the one about the travellers Hanzelka and Zikmund; the duo
that travelled the world in a Tatra 87 during some politically very
difficult times and thus created a legend about this unique vehicle with
an air-cooled engine.
One cold evening, as Denis Alexandre and I were drinking coffee together
in Prague, he suggested that my photos of Tatra wrecks might be an
interesting addition to the exhibition, and my ears perked up! Suddenly
I heard this Frenchman telling me that my grand and unrealistic dream
could actually soon become reality! Once the preparations for the show
really got going on all levels, it was clear that this was a very
challenging event logistically speaking. About half the cars belonged to
French collectors, but many unique cars had to be transported to Paris
from the Czech Republic. Loading and unloading rare cars into a special
truck is a difficult process, and quite the show! Salon Rétromobile is
one of the largest veteran car shows in the world. It is visited by over
100,000 people in just a few days and several other related events take
place all over Paris – mainly auctions. I could barely imagine this high
level of attendance and wondered if perhaps the numbers weren’t somewhat
exaggerated. But then we experienced it for ourselves! Tens of thousands
of people wandered through the exhibition daily. The most common
inquiries went as follows: ‘Where do Tatras come from? The Czech
Republic? And are they still made? Oh, Tatra, like the Paris–Dakar
Rally, of course!’ France is rather self-sufficient when it comes to
cars and so Tatra is still a bit of a mysterious brand there. Yet
surprising people with something that has a deep and rich history, yet
is unknown to them was a great pleasure!
I must add that in February of 2020, when the car show took place, the
coronavirus epidemic that spread from China was closing in on us. During
the show, things were still relatively normal. The French news still
just reported on the epidemic as one of several news items, however, on
my way home I had some trouble getting onto a plane as many flights were
cancelled. Passengers and airlines found themselves in a difficult
situation, which was getting worse and more complicated by the day. Had
it been scheduled two weeks later, the show would’ve had to be
cancelled, just as many other later events were.

Dakar 2021 Stage 4. Buggyra drivers flew for 300 kilometres with full throttle!
“
A very fast stage from Wadi Ad-Dawasir to Riyadh ended the first third of the 43rd edition of Dakar Rally 2021. The 4th stage of the competition suited Buggyra Racing drivers well and they all are looking forward to the next challenges.
Wednesday’s stage was a big reminder of last year’s Dakar that so many drivers complained about. Just with a throttle pedal to the floor and flying over the stage. But, after the challenges from previous days, it was a nice change. Tomáš Enge had a good run without any technical hiccups. And even though he had to start from the back, he managed to take 7th place in his category.
“All good. I only stopped once to check the rear axle, because we drove in soft sand and the car was moving from side to side. I didn’t like that, but it was all good. Even though we had a good run yesterday, the organisers didn’t let us start in time that we expected. We were delayed by 15 minutes and many competitors got ahead of us. But the Dakar is great,” said satisfied Tomáš.
On the other hand, Josef Macháček had to deal with unexpected issues even before the start of the stage. He finished with a 40-minute loss.
And the Tatra Buggyra Racing drivers also enjoyed some good pace. The best four trucks of the day finished within 20 seconds of each other! Ignacio Casale then took the glory today as the best Buggyra driver, but it did not come until the very end.
“Today, it was actually our first day without any technical issues. This stage was similar to the last year’s event, with a 140 kph run from start to finish. We did 200 kilometres behind Ignacio and Jaroslav Valtr before we got ahead of them both in dunes. We caught up with a Kamaz just before the end, but there was a lot of dust. We then got lost and had to go back. But it wasn’t too bad, I’m satisfied with today’s stage.”
Martin Šoltys finished in 7th place, just behind his teammate Ignacio Casale.
“By the end of the stage, we got close to a Kamaz. But we decided, with Alvaro, to slow down and focus on the navigation. And that actually was a good decision. The Tatra is working well, and it’s just the manual transmission that’s making it a bit more difficult for us in the dunes,” said the 6th fastest man in the Trucks standings.
“The pace is huge, and every mistake is very costly. Both Tatras are among the fastest trucks and run without any serious issues. Ignacio is really enjoying his truck debut and he’s showing an unbelievable performance, he and Martin are pushing forward. The main goal is to always make it to the bivouac. Tomáš and Josef are fighters, but we’re still not even halfway through yet. The results don’t matter until the end,” summed up Jan Kalivoda, the Buggyra Racing press officer.
On Thursday, the crews will drive from Riyadh to Al Qaisumah. This 456-kilometre-long stage promises dunes and some stones as well.

Dakar 2021 Stage2
More than ever, Dmitry Sotnikov appears to be a candidate for overall triumph. The Kamaz driver enjoyed a second victory between Bisha and Wadi Ad-Dawasir by beating Mardeev and Viazovich to consolidate his lead in the general standings.
“It was a rather long stage, but the second part was really fast. The beginning part was complicated because there were the first dunes. We needed just a few of them to feel more comfortable, and after that we tried to reach our ideal pace. The navigation was complicated, but we tried to pay attention for the right directions and check the roads for any traps, but our tactics were good for today and we are happy to finish”.
