Dakar 2017 Stage 8: Loprais comments

LopraisRestday

Goodbye, Bolivia…

Today’s shortened stage, the last in Bolivia, is behind us. We will wave to the mountains and I must say that I am not satisfied with today’s result, even though we did not have any technical problems. We did not have enough power. We just could not keep up. The vehicles around were faster. We hope that we were choked mainly by the altitude. Disillusion is also due to the length of the stage, because the constant reduction of sharp kilometres can definitely help us to better overall result.

January 11, 2017 is the day of the 9th stage from SALTA to CHILECITO. This stage should have a total of 977 km, of which the measured section for all categories should have 406 km But so far it is not clear what will happen, because the only access road to Salta is under water and the entire convoy is said to be instructed to return. We will have to wait for the solution.

We believe that this time, despite the difficulties the serving of kilometres will be preserved and the results will be somewhat more favourable for us.

Dakar 2017 Stage 7

no comment Posted by smitkees
Following the cancellation of stage 6 on the eve of the rest day, persistent bad weather conditions forced the race directors to change the course of stage 7 from La Paz to Uyuni. A new course was designed and a new road book was drafted during the rest day.
The new course is an unprecedented combination of the original routes of stages 6 and 7. Today’s 161 km special will mainly take place on sandy terrain, sandwiched between a 400 km link section and another one 240 km long. The special starts at 10 am, with the first motorcycles expected to reach the Uyuni bivouac at 3.30 pm.

Dakar 2017: Loprais comments

LopraisStage5-2

The fifth stage was a test of nerves for the crew more than anything else. Our problem with the power steering pump reoccurred 3 times, and the fact that we got to the finish in good health was due to the force majeure. The bivouac that expected us in the finish, was completely flooded. The organizers´ decision to cancel the next stage was reasonable. After spending the night on a closed highway, we moved to La Paz. A stunning place, enchanting landscape, but the weather is bad. It was raining until 10 o´clock of local time and it stopped raining, but there is a lot of mud everywhere and we will see what happens next. In all that the mechanics work hard on technology, and even the necessary spare parts have arrived. We thank the quick connection with a rucksack on the back and we believe that all of this will help us.

January 9, 2017 we await the seventh stage from LA PAZ to UYUNI. It should be the same for all categories, at the length of 622 km, 322 km special section.

We believe that the weather will allow us to drive through the stage in its entirety, without reducing or cancelling.

Dakar 2017: Loprais and Kolomy comment on stage 5, Buggyra stage 5 video, Stage 6 cancelled.

LopraisStage5-1

Loprais Comments on stage 5:

Fifth stage – Is it yesterday or today?
It can´t be true! Today´s initial phase of the stage was almost identical to the yesterday´s one from our point of view. Shortly after the start of the speed trial we encountered the same problem. The power steering pump again! With the only difference that it is raining today. Another loss of 27 minutes.
What do we feel? Futility and frustration … In addition, further progress of the stage was not smooth either and our loss has even increased… Due to the poor conditions during our telephone call the explanation will be provided probably only in the video. We do not know if the results will have to be modified, because half of the trucks did not pass through WP3 and it is not yet clear what the organizer will do with that.
What should we expect tomorrow? Stage 6 from ORURO to LA PAZ at a total length of 772 km, of which 513 km measured. Whether we will drive the whole length will depend on the weather, which is very unpredictable here. Perhaps we won´t even relish the beauty of Lake Titicaca and we will be happy to arrive in time to LA PAZ, a small town at an altitude of 4000 meters above the sea level

Martin Kolomy:
Bad luck in the shortened fifth stage also Martin Kolomý: wandered and had two punctured tires. While still in the middle of measured section headed.
“The first half of the stage we had, but in the second part we had navigation problems, when it was badly written from the organizers. At the end I had crossed the edge of the dunes, for which they have been around some rocks, and I tore my two rubbers. There we again lost but this is racing and it’s all the same. We have no choice nothing but put up with it and keep fighting, “said the drenched bivouac Bruntálský pilot.
Stage 6  cancelled
This morning, some competitors were still making their way through the special. Extreme weather conditions were preventing competitors and their vehicles from reaching the bivouac and preparing for today’s Stage 6 properly. Furthermore, the scouts sent by the organisers to reconnoitre today’s stage and reported that the terrain is steadily deteriorating. As a result, stage 6 from Oruro to La Paz has been cancelled.

Dakar 2017 stage 5: Kolomy drops back to 20th after leading at CP2, Loprais 25th

LopraisStage5

Yesterday he lost more than 1 hour 20 minutes, so today Martin Kolomý had nothing to lose and he started the special with his foot to the floor. The Czech trucker  reached WP2 in the lead, but only seven seconds ahead of yesterday’s stage winner Gerard de Rooy, who is kept pace with Kolomý. Gerard de Rooy grabbed a second consecutive stage victory, has now reached his cruising speed and has taken command of the general standings. A Kamaz truck was again runner-up, but this time it was Eduard Nikolaev, who also takes second place in the general standings. Kolomy dropped back for unknown reasons.

Dakar 2017: Stage 4 Buggyra-Tatra Video

Title holder Gerard de Rooy (Iveco) regained his form and served up a superb battle against Airat Mardeev (Kamaz) who he beat by only 30 seconds on completion of the 416-km special, to give the Dutchman his 31st stage victory on the Dakar. Kolomy had an off-day, finishing 20th.
