1948 Tatra T87 Aerodynamic Limousine
Chassis number 3480332
Known today as a manufacturer of all wheel drive trucks and lorries, the Czech company Tatra is one of the oldest car manufacturers in the world. Its first passenger car was introduced in 1897 from what is the oldest vehicle factory in Central Europe and the second oldest in the world, though the Tatra name did not appear until 1919. It was in the 1930s and 1940s that Tatra was at the peak of its powers producing a range of aerodynamically streamlined luxury limousines that reached it apotheosis with the T87. As The Autocar Magazine said of one of its forerunners in 1935 it is, “A design of great interest embodying in principle the ideals of many designers.”
This 1948 Tatra T87 is one of the very first cars from the later production period of 1948 – 1950 and is a very fine example of what is a most rare vehicle. This car was found in Slovakia in 2000 and was purchased and then imported to Australia in 2002 by its current owner. This T87 was then subject to a US concours standard restoration by Sleeping Beauties of Brisbane, Queensland, a company renowned for exhibiting high quality restored cars at Pebble Beach. It is believed to be one of only a handful of T87s built with a T603 2.5 litre V8 engine and a sunroof. Accompanying the car is another original 3.0 litre T87 engine that was sourced during the restoration period before it was appreciated that the T603 was indeed its original power source. Whilst now an older restoration the car has travelled very few miles since the restoration was complete and it still presents fabulously today. This iconic vehicle is ready for presentation at major motoring events around the world. Jay Leno has one in his collection and rates it one of his most favourite cars!

T 603 on auction in Australia
With a Tatra 603, a Fiat 130 Coupe and a giant American LaFrance Speedster on offer, diversity will be a strong theme at Shannons’ next auction in Melbourne on August 27.
Particularly tempting will be the affordability of many of the lots. Assuming they sell for around their pre-auction estimates, many of these cars will prove you can have just as much fun in a $20,000 classic as you can in a car worth 10 times that.
The 1974 Tatra, complete with a rear-mounted and air-cooled 2.5-litre V8, has been reckoned by Shannons to go for between $14,000 and $18,000.
This is the same car that was sold by Shannons in 2009, when it went for $15,000. That’s a lot of wackiness for the money.

T 87 to be auctioned
For all of its present day fame – it’s credited with inspiring both the Tucker and the Volkswagen Beetle as well as acting as the Czech secret weapon during World War II – it’s easy to overlook the fact that Czechoslovakian manufacturer Tatra over the course of 12 years built only about 3,000 examples of the highly advanced T87, only a fraction of which exist today. So it’s not a common occurrence to see one offered at auction, as Bonhams will at its Quail Lodge sale next month.
Designed by Austrian engineer Hans Ledwinka, the T87 was one of Tatra’s first forays into aerodynamic automobiles and was based on the philosophies and input of early aerodynamicists Edmund Rumpler and Paul Jaray. Its resulting drag coefficient of 0.36 may not seem all that impressive today (it’s the same as a late 1990s Ford Escort and no better than an AMC Pacer), but was astounding for 1936, the year Tatra introduced it. Beyond the aerodynamic shape of the car, it also featured a backbone chassis, fully independent suspension, and a rear-mounted magnesium-alloy air-cooled 85hp 2.9L overhead-camshaft V-8 that could propel the T87 to triple-digit speeds. During the German occupation of Chechoslovakia during World War II, many a Nazi senior officer appropriated T87s for their luxury status and high-speed potential, but legend has it that more than a few of those senior officers met their fates when they attempted high-speed turns in the T87 and found that it didn’t handle in the same manner as the front-engine cars they were used to. Nevertheless, Hitler himself is said to have appreciated Ledwinka’s design so much he had Ferdinand Porsche emulate it when designing the Volkswagen, a claim supported by Tatra’s successful 1961 lawsuit against Volkswagen.
