One of the best surprises of 2016 was the return of Tatra to Greenwich; Tatras made appearances in 2005, 2007, and 2008 at this popular event, giving up the Eastern Bloc niche to Volgas for a few years. But the Czech marque returned in grand style, with a 1941 T87 sedan wowing cognoscenti and concours newbies alike. This rear-engined V8 sedan, now owned by Barney Hallingbee, is said to have been restored in the Czech Republic in the 1990s before making its way to the new world. T87s have been climbing in value and just a few yards away Bonhams was offering yet another T87 in its auction tent. Whatever the previous American owner paid for this car in the 1990s we have to say “well bought,” because the best examples have been steadily adding $5,000 a year for the past decade.
