Dakar Stage 5 Report
The 5th stage characterized by white dunes, started in Fiambale. The short 177 km long special was reduced due to bad weather by another 24 kilometers. Ales Loprais started as seventh, because Eduard Nikolaev (Kamaz) had protestested successfully after his time loss in the fourth stage. The first three control points Ales went to 5th place behind the very successfull trio of Team de Rooy and Nikolayev. In the end, however,Loprais managed to split up the de Rooy team and finished second, 14 seconds behind winner Gerard de Rooy.
“Today it was the first real stage of the Dakar, albeit short, but with lots of sand and a relatively clear view without extreme dust cloud that chased us past days. In the end we still managed to accelerate. In the service stage, we had to change the chassis and it paid we do, the car had improved handling characteristics. I’m working on, “said Ales.
Looking at the overall ranking is still only know a certain change, which sands Fiambaly foreseeably contributed. Slowly and slightly rozřazuje separates the group of three team de Rooy, Ales and Nikolayev from the rest of the top ten. Desert stage also chosen first income from the big favorites.
After a great performance the previous day, unfortunately, stopped with engine failure on track Marcel van Vliet, and if it intervenes in the fighting, then definitely no longer the head of the order. Throughout stage maintained minimum distances from each other incredibly balanced team pilots de Rooy – in the overall standings then the second placed Biasiona leads third placed Stacey by just 4 seconds! It is still true that the increasing demands of desert stages continuously rising relativity small temporal distances that stretch.
Today, the sixth day, the contestants had to move to the territory of Chile, despite the legendary San Francisco Pass at an altitude of 4726 meters above sea level. Due to extreme weather it is expected that crossing the the pass will be almost impossible due to rain and snow, so racers quietly moved to another way in a convoy of Copiapo and Copiapo Special map to be canceled. Saturday’s stage before the day off will always be one of the hardest .
